Street Angels Helps Chester Fly The Purple Flag In 2025

Chester has proudly retained the prestigious Purple Flag accreditation for its vibrant evening and night-time economy. Areas that earn the Purple Flag distinction are recognized for offering a diverse and dynamic mix of dining, entertainment, and culture, all while ensuring the safety and wellbeing of visitors and residents.

A key highlight of Chester’s submission was the successful trial of the Street Angels project, which plays a pivotal role in promoting safety across the city at nighttime. As part of the submission, it was noted that “the successful Street Angels trial is a fantastic achievement, and we welcome the news of plans underway to expand the service further. Notably, the University’s active involvement in this initiative is impressive and will enhance existing safety measures, improving the overall safety of students engaging with the night-time economy and beyond.” Furthermore, it was highlighted that anti-social behaviour has been on the decline, thanks in part to the vital work of Street Angels.

Councillor Christine Warner, Cabinet Member for Homes, Planning and Safer Communities said: “It’s particularly fitting at the same time Chester is being crowned as one of the world’s most welcoming cities that we can keep flying the Purple Flag in recognition of Chester remaining safe and welcoming during the evening. None of this would be possible without the many city centre partners working together to ensure Chester remains safe and welcoming.”

Carl Critchlow, CEO of Chester BID said: “We’re pleased that once again Chester has received its Purple Flag Renewal Accreditation. The accreditation is a testament to the quality of our night-time economy and the dedication of our hospitality businesses, who ensure a safe, welcoming environment for visitors to the city.”

Inspector James Wilson, of Chester Local Policing Unit, added: “Chester is a great place to visit and officially the most welcoming place in the UK, and I welcome the Purple Flag accreditation given to the city. We work closely with all our partners across Chester to ensure those enjoying the night time economy can do so safely, including Cheshire West and Chester Council, businesses and private security, amongst others.”

Keeping the city safe is at the heart of Street Angels Chester. Project lead, Gary Wootten, said “as a team we are delighted to be a part of the night-time economy to make Chester a safe place to visit, live and work in. Every night we are out is different and we find ourselves helping people in all sorts of situations, and we always feel so appreciated.”

Since the ending of the pilot in March 2024 up until mid-February 2025, Street Angels has undertaken 61 shifts totalling 1,478.5 volunteer hours. If you’d like to join the team you can find out more here
